The Campbell Award–winning author’s followup to Tea with the Black Dragon “Wow! MacAvoy’s done it again” (New York Times–bestselling author Anne McCaffrey).

Mayland Long, aka the Black Dragon, has been enjoying a peaceful relationship with Martha Macnamara—but suddenly they face threats from seeming every side. A wild psychic force is loose in the world; Martha’s three-year-old granddaughter has been kidnapped; and one of her Celtic musician friends has been found dead, hanging by a rope of twisted grass. Now the Black Dragon must use his wits to rescue the little girl and hunt for a killer . . . even if it brings him to a horrifying realization.

In this novel, the author of The Book of Kells returns to the modern-day California of Tea with the Black Dragon, and blends fantasy, mystery, Chinese lore, and a timeless love story as she did so masterfully in her debut—which earned nominations for Nebula, Hugo, World Fantasy, and Philip K. Dick Awards. “MacAvoy supports her tale with a superbly drawn cast of characters . . . and her usual superior command of language” (Booklist).

I just wanted to chime in with the others about the ghastly number of errors and typos in this edition. As a previous reviewer mentioned, this is very obviously a scan-to-text copy of the original book, which was never proofread by anyone. I am on page six so far and I have noticed at least a dozen typos and wrong words. They are so frequent that it is disruptive to the reading process, and you sometimes have to stop and figure out what the hell the sentence is actually supposed to say. Really very unacceptable. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Find a used edition from 1986 and read that instead.

Twisting the Rope Black Dragon Book 2 eBook R A MacAvoy Reviews

Amazingly vivid writing! R A MacAvoy blends a bit of Ireland with modern day California with a good helping of Chinese lore. Read the paper version if you can find it. The version suffers from grammatical and transliterations.
I adored these books (including Tea With the Black Dragon), and had read them many times when they were first published. After a while the paper books fell to tatters. E-media can be a joy; like transferring old vinyl onto discs, I can now enjoy these wonderful old books as often as I want.
R.A. MacAvoy is an author of rare insight; her Diamano trilogy takes a person beyond fantasy back into truth, and the Black Dragon books have much to say about quest, fulfillment and sitting still.
I am delighted to have these books back in my library.
Perhaps not as satisfying as "Tea With The Black Dragon," but enjoyable enough to recommend to my friends anyway. Maryland Long is a wonderful character, but I am not sure that the author quite knew what to do with him this time out.
This is the follow-up to Tea With the Black Dragon, and while still maintaining some of the author's wit and style it cannot stand alone and loses much of the whimsy. The story gets clunky and the characters are not as fun. This ebook is also marred by numerous editing errors. Still, a fairly good read, especially if you have read the first and want to see what happens next.
I have read this book several times, both in paperback and now on . The version did not scan well and desperately needs to be edited for all the scanning errors it contains. The paperback was as expected, well written, full of delightful characters, and a wonderful story.. If you can't handle typos, buy the paperback version not kindle.
The typos in this edition are really unacceptable. They make the book unreadable before the second chapter even begins. To pick one example out of many, when Oolong is going back to look for a pair of sunglasses, another character wonders if he can "see that fax ahead of him." It's obviously supposed to be "that FAR ahead of him." This was the point at which I put down the book.

Most of the errors could be corrected by any copy editor with even an ounce of common sense. I'm very fond of MacAvoy's work and have greatly enjoyed her other books, so this was especially disappointing.
The e-book version of this book was converted to an e-book using ReaderWorks Publisher. This is no great sin in itself. The crime is that the book quite clearly received no final line-editing by a human. Not even by the usual underpaid, semi-literate English Major. All the usual computer errors are still in there. Many, many words are incorrect--not misspelled--the wrong words. There is a very large amount of corrupted grammar. The grammar errors are quite obviously the work of a computer program. I suspect that the book was scanned in from a paper edition, converted by ReaderWorks--and never, ever, edited!

It is a crime to make people pay money for such a lazy, greedy, unscrupulous production.

The book itself is fine, though not as good as the precursor, 'Tea with a black dragon,.
